Blur part of an image online

Blur is not secure redaction. A blur can sometimes be reversed to recover what was underneath, and blurred text is the easiest to read back. If you need a detail hidden for good, cover it with a solid redaction box instead. That removes the pixels underneath, so there is nothing left to recover.
How to blur part of an image
- Paste with Ctrl+V, or drag-and-drop / load your image.
- The blur tool is ready. Drag a box over the area to soften.
- Adjust the Blur strength in the options bar; add more boxes as needed.
- Copy with Ctrl+C, or save as PNG.
When to blur, and when to redact
Blur works well when you just want something to fade back: a distracting wall behind your subject, or a face in a crowd you would rather not feature. It is the wrong tool when a detail has to stay secret, because the original can sometimes be rebuilt from the blurred pixels. For names, numbers, addresses, or any text you really need hidden, use a solid black redaction box.

Blur a license plate or sign
Soften a number plate or a sign so it sits quietly in the background of a street or car photo. A small, strong blur keeps the rest of the shot sharp. If the plate has to be unreadable for certain, cover it with a solid box.
Private, on-device blurring
Most online blur tools send your photo to a server first. This one applies the blur in your browser and bakes it into the saved file, so your image stays on your device.

Can a blur be reversed?
Sometimes. A light blur can be partly undone, and blurred text is the easiest to read back. Use blur to play something down, not to keep it secret. For anything sensitive, use a solid redaction box instead.
